The Legend Awakens: DreamWorks “Forgotten Island”

A historic era for  Filipino representation on the global stage is officially over. DreamWorks Animation is diving into the rich tapestry of Southeast Asian folklore with its upcoming September 2026 feature, Forgotten Island. This marks a historic milestone as the first-ever major Hollywood production to center entirely on Philippine mythology and culture. Consequently, the film is already being hailed as a “cultural reset” for the animation industry.

A Journey Into the Mystical Archipelago

Filipino-American filmmaker Januel Mercado directed this feature. Previously, he co-directed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The story follows best friends Jo and Raissa. Stars H.E.R. and Liza Soberano provide their voices. Because the film is set in the 1990s, the narrative weaves together iconic elements of Filipino life. These include the nostalgia of riding a jeepney and the high stakes of a Sandugo. Furthermore, the film introduces a world filled with legendary creatures. For instance, you will see the Bakunawa and the Sarimanok. Additionally, the legendary Lea Salonga voices the terrifying Manananggal.

Breaking New Ground in Global Animation

Philippine animation has a long and rich history locally. However, Forgotten Island represents a major global milestone. It is the first time a “Big Three” studio has given these stories a $100M+ platform. Moreover, the production features a predominantly Filipino cast. This ensemble includes Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, and Jo Koy. The visuals showcase the lush, tropical landscapes of the island of Nakali. Because the creators used hand-drawn, painterly textures, the film evokes a sense of memory. Consequently, every frame feels like an authentic love letter to the Philippines.

Anticipation for the 2026 Release

Finally, the global rollout is scheduled for September 25, 2026. This project is much more than an animated comedy-adventure. Instead, it serves as a definitive cultural landmark. DreamWorks grounds the fantasy in real traditions and ’90s nostalgia. Thus, the studio is ensuring that global audiences finally celebrate Filipino heritage.

Overall, Forgotten Island is set to be a visual and emotional masterpiece. DreamWorks blends its signature humor with the profound depth of our local myths. Therefore, the film proves that our stories are universal. It is a bold and long-overdue celebration of the Filipino spirit. Without a doubt, this movie will leave a lasting mark on cinema.
