This exciting release of Filipina Barbie coincides with the Filipino American History Month celebration.
When it comes to creativity, there’s literally no shortage of it among Filipinos. Just this week, Mattel dropped its stunning Filipina-inspired Barbie as part of the Styled by Design series—and it’s designed by none other than the Filipino-American artist Carlyle Nuera.
Mattel released the new Barbie on October 9th for Barbie Fan Club members. The general public gained access on October 10th. This Barbie celebrates the radiant morena beauty of the Filipina with a modern twist.
A Closer Look at the Filipina Barbie Design
Carlyle Nuera’s Filipina Barbie is a perfect blend of traditional Filipino culture and contemporary fashion, exemplifying both the elegance and strength of Filipino women. His attention to detail truly shines, capturing cultural significance through Barbie’s iconic form. Released just in time for Filipino American History Month, this Barbie is a beautiful tribute to the Filipino heritage.
Through Mattel’s Instagram, fans got an exclusive, up-close look at the doll. The Filipina Barbie is adorned with a gold-accented crown inspired by the sun rays from the Philippine flag. Her outfit features a corset with flowing terno-style sleeves, paired with a traditional malong “tapis” wrap skirt that ties the whole look together. The combination of traditional textiles and fashion-forward design makes the doll such a visual feast!
Unique Accessories and Details
But the details don’t stop there. Completing the look, the Filipina Barbie sports a pair of elevated bakya sandals featuring bahay-kubo details sculpted onto the heels. She wears elegant gold janggay (finger jewelry) and showcases traditional batok tattoos on her arms, adding another layer of authenticity and cultural richness to her appearance.
To recall, this isn’t the first time Mattel has released a Filipina Barbie. Back in the 1990s, Mattel partnered with Richwell Trading Co. to produce Barbie dolls dressed in traditional Filipino attire for the Philippine market. In 2012, the Philippines Barbie was introduced as part of the Dolls of the World Series.
Carlyle Nuera is no stranger to designing Barbies with Filipino influence. In 2015, he created the Mutya Barbie, which captured the glamorous essence of old-school Filipino beauty pageants. Dressed in a pink organza terno with butterfly sleeves, Mutya Barbie also paid homage to Philippine culture with its fabric prints inspired by different indigenous tribes and the sun icon from the Philippine flag. The doll even had embroidered details inspired by the sampaguita, the national flower of the country.
Nuera proudly shared such new achievement in an IG post captioned: “Mabuhayyy, get into this major morena maganda! If Mutya Barbie is the demure, responsible Ate, this new Barbie is the lil sis that always be galabanting (so, me lol). Ate Mutya Barbie even let lil sis borrow her jewelry; this new Barbie wears the exact same bracelet as Mutya Barbie!”
Pricing and Availability
Priced at $100, the new Filipina Barbie is available for pre-order on Mattel’s official website. Shipping will begin by December 20. This Barbie is part of the Styled by Design series. It celebrates designers’ creativity and their love for high fashion. This doll offers a premium collector’s item that blends artistry with cultural pride.
