Get to Know the Filipina Artist Behind Adidas’ Latest Limited-Edition Rivalry Low 86

October 26, 2023

October 26, 2023
This is the fifth Filipino-designed adidas footwear, the first one from a Filipina.

In one way or another, you’ve probably chanced upon her vibrant works of art—all those whimsical, candy-colored animated figures that initially captivate with their beauty but hold an unspoken, profound message when examined more closely. In this age of artistic exploration and social commentary, Yeo Kaa has emerged as a captivating voice that transcends boundaries and resonates with a global audience.

Yeo Kaa’s artistic journey has been instrumental in shedding light on silent battles and the resilience they hold. By amplifying this narrative of strength and perseverance, she has not only captured the attention of the art world but has also drawn the interest of brands that align with her message of resilience and creativity, just like her latest collaboration with adidas.

Yeo Kaa: The Filipina Behind Adidas Rivalry Low 86

Adidas has just unveiled a revamped version of their classic ’80s basketball shoes, featuring bold green and blue stripes that perfectly echo the “Strong Girl Needs Rest Too” theme of Yeo Kaa’s collaboration.

Exuding a sense of calmness and freshness, the adidas 86 Low boasts a clean leather upper adorned with vibrant colors and accentuated by graphics that stand out, featuring Yeo Kaa’s signature “strong” typeface and the iconic characters from her artwork. Additionally, the B-ball classic comes with eye-catching bright yellow laces, adding a touch of playfulness to the design.

As Yeo Kaa puts:

“Yung concept ng shoes is about strength. ‘Yung pinaka-pinaghuhugutan ko ngayon is yung feeling na akala ko hindi na matatapos yung ganong pakiramdam na masama at mabigat. But lilipas at lilipas rin pala siya at magiging okay rin ang lahat sa huli.”

Yeo Kaa has now become part of the esteemed lineup of Filipino artists collaborating with adidas, joining the ranks of Quiccs and Egg Fiasco. In the words of adidas Philippines Brand Activation Manager Jen Dacasin: “Through this collaboration, we continue our commitment to support Filipino creators by giving them a platform to share their art and the messages within it with a larger audience. We couldn’t be happier to have Yeo Kaa as the first Filipino to design adidas footwear and for the shoe to hold such a profound and important message of strength and rest.”

The adidas Rivalry Low 86 “Strong Girl” is now available in stores and on the adidas website, with a price tag of P6,800. By choosing these uniquely designed sneakers, you not only show your support for local talent but also wear a piece of art that carries a deeper message, a testament to the power of resilience and creativity in the face of adversity.
