Despite its reputation as a spooky month, with the media’s horror stories and chilling tales passed down through generations, the first two days of November present a different perspective. In a timely cinematic exploration, Southeast Asian film distributor Encore Films announced the exclusive release of The Tunnel to Summer, The Exit of Goodbyes at SM Cinemas, starting November 1. This film, which clinched the prestigious Paul Grimault Prize at the 2023 Annecy Festival, offers a touching and romantic coming-of-age story, weaving the tale of two young high school students from different backgrounds who, despite their differences, share experiences of grief and loss.

Adapted from the 2019 light novel written by Mei Hachimoku and illustrated by Kukka, The Tunnel of Summer, The Exit of Goodbyes follows the story of two reserved high school students who discover the Urashima Tunnel, which, according to local folklore has the power to fulfill one’s deepest desires, though not without a significant cost.
Amid their exploration of the tunnel, a profound friendship sprouted, like a delicate bloom in the hidden garden of their shared secrets. Over time, they forged a strong bond, united by their shared determination to keep the tunnel’s secrets safe until they unraveled its mysteries and had their most cherished desires granted.
Voiced by Ouji Suzuka (Kaoru Touno) and Marie Iitoyo (Anzu Hanashiro), the film was directed by Tomohisa Taguchi (Akudama Drive and Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War Arc), with CLAP handling animation production. Meanwhile, Tomomi Yabuki of Pompo: The Cinephile served as the character designer and chief animation director. The supporting cast also includes Tasuku Hatanaka (Shouhei Kaga), Arisa Komiya (Koharu Kawasaki), Haruka Terui (Mr. Hamamoto), Rikiya Koyama (Kaoru’s father), and Seiran Kobayashi (Karen Touno).
