‘Live a Life with a Grateful Heart’
Yes, Melai makes us laugh. But hers isn’t the kind of humor that’s rehearsed or scripted. It’s not forced. It’s not mean. It’s the kind that tickles your heart, not just your ribs—the kind that’s honest and grounded, with no pretensions or put-ons. Her authenticity shines through, and that’s exactly why she continues to be so loved across generations.
Despite her fun, free-spirited image, Melai takes her role as a parent seriously. Scratch that, lovingly. She describes herself as someone who’s quite hands-on and values discipline.
“I am very kuan, strict. Hindi naman sobrang strict talaga. Pero ako ‘yong parang disciplinarian sa mga anak ko pati sa mga pamangkin ko,” she says.
She believes that raising kind and respectful children starts with speaking up, even if that means calling out bad behavior. She expressed how passionate she is about instilling the right values and lessons in young children. Her goal is to address certain behaviors before they become ingrained. She’s dedicated to guiding the youth and consistently stands firm in calling out actions that don’t align with positive character.
This is not the ‘fear-me-I’m-your-mom’ type of discipline. But it’s actually grounded in love, in empathy, and in that signature Melai humor. She makes sure to keep parenting fun, full of teaching moments, and with lots of giggles in between.
‘Keep the Faith, Keep Up the Good Work’
From reality TV star to one of the most beloved hosts in local entertainment, Melai’s rise to success is one for the books—or, in this case, for the group chats and TikTok threads. Who would have thought that the girl from General Santos, known for her funny accent and sweet kilig moments in the PBB house, would one day be co-hosting a morning talk show with Kris Aquino, Regine Velasquez, and Jolina Magdangal?
“Doon ko talaga nakita sa sarili ko na, ‘Ay, pwede pala ako dito sa hosting!’” she recalls with a laugh.
That morning show was a turning point. It opened doors to more hosting gigs, including Pinoy Big Brother, and even her own digital talk show, Kuan on One, a digital comedy series for Bisaya and Bisaya-at-heart fans everywhere. “Hindi ko alam na mayroon pala akong position dito. Thank you, Lord, na binigay Ninyo ang comedy!” the host beams.
But her style of humor hits differently. It’s not about throwing shade or punching down. She’s all about self-deprecating jokes, not to put herself down, but to lift others up. She explained how this is actually rooted in her upbringing. Her family has always been naturally funny but also very mindful of how words can affect people. That’s why she makes it a point to think about how her jokes might land. “Kaya lage ko nalang pino-focus sa sarili ko kasi alam ko namang hindi ko mahi-hurt ang sarili ko.”
Still, life in showbiz isn’t always all glitz and glamour. There have been times when things got overwhelming, especially with all the expectations, pressure, and unpredictability of show business. But Melai holds on to her faith.
She shares what she would tell her younger self if given the chance: to simply keep going. She affirms that feelings are valid. It’s okay to sit in self-pity and let emotions flow, but perseverance is key.
“Magpatuloy ka lang. Mararating mo rin kung nasaan ako ngayon. Ewan ko lang kung magugustuhan mo kung nasaan ako ngayon. Little Melai, keep it up and keep it down,” she laughed, with a mix of humor and honesty.
‘Work Hard, Play Hard, and Keep a Good Heart’
For Melai, staying relevant means being in touch, not just with fans, but with her own kids. To deliver relatable humor and truly connect with audiences, hosts and entertainers like her need to stay updated with trends and adapt to shifts in the real world. She does this by tuning in to what her children are interested in, keeping her finger on the pulse of the younger generation. Her open-mindedness is likely what keeps her young at heart.
That same openness also applies to her work. When asked what she wants to try next, Melai gives a surprising answer: “Gusto ko ng horror. Gusto kong gawin ‘yon. Tapos hindi na magjowa. Hindi na magkaibigan. Barkadahan na ‘yong ininvite sa lugar tapos doon mangyayari ‘yong mga kababalaghan at isa-isa pala kayong iaalay,” she says excitedly.
But she’s not just talking about being the damsel in distress. “Gusto ko maging horror, maging monster nalang para tapos ang usapan.” Melai’s willingness to try new things, no matter how quirky or unexpected, shows just how versatile she is. She doesn’t box herself in—and maybe that’s her secret. She just shows up, does her thing, and lets her heart lead the way.
“Enjoy your career. Work your career with a good heart,” as she aptly puts it.
She also shares an important promise she made to herself and her colleagues: if her attitude ever shifts throughout her career, she’ll step away from show business. “Mag-stop na ako sa showbiz at mag-focus na ako sa sarili ko,” she says. She believes she was placed in the entertainment industry to uplift others and spread positivity. But if her character changes along the way, she sees it as a sign to move on.
That statement hits deep. For Melai, it’s not just about being funny or famous. It’s more about serving others, about making people feel better, even if just for a moment, and using her platform for good.
Beyond the ‘Kuan’: A Voice for the Bisaya and Beyond
One of Melai’s proudest missions is amplifying the Bisaya voice in mainstream media. She wants people to see that being Bisaya isn’t something to laugh at. It’s actually something to be proud of. “Ang ugali wala ‘yan sa dialect kung hindi nasa pagkatao.”
