Kathryn Bernardo, Marian Rivera, Judy Ann Santos, Julia Montes, Rebecca Chuaunsu, and Ara Mina are set for a Best Actress showdown at this year’s annual honors given by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences.
It’s that time of the year again when Philippine cinema’s finest talents take center stage for one of the industry’s most prestigious honors. The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS), the oldest award-giving body in the country, is once again set to celebrate excellence in film, having been founded in 1952. This year’s nominations highlight not just artistry and storytelling but also the power of cinema to reflect Filipino values, stir national pride, and shed light on urgent social issues.
Recent films have made waves not only at the box office but also in sparking conversations about the country’s cultural identity and modern-day challenges. From gripping dramas to adrenaline-fueled thrillers, this year’s roster proves that local filmmaking continues to evolve without losing its soul.
Leading Entries and Strong Contenders for FAMAS 2025
Topping the list of nominees is Green Bones, the film now available on Netflix that previously earned recognition at the MMFF and Gawad Dangal Awards. Its poignant narrative and the strong performances of Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid have clearly resonated with audiences and critics alike.
Joining Green Bones at the top is Mamay: A Journey to Greatness, a three-hour biopic led by veteran actors Jeric Raval and Ara Mina. Based on the life of Lanao Mayor Marcos Mamay, the film offers an inspiring yet unflinching look at leadership, personal sacrifice, and resilience. Meanwhile, Topakk, an intense action-thriller starring Julia Montes, follows a former special forces operative suffering from PTSD who finds himself drawn into a dangerous mission to save a woman from a ruthless drug cartel. With its mix of heart-pounding action and emotional depth, Topakk has emerged as one of the year’s most talked-about entries.
Romantic drama Hello, Love, Again, a co-production of Star Cinema and GMA Pictures, closely follows the nomination with five nods. While Vice Ganda’s And The Breadwinner Is… secured eight.
Here’s the Complete List of the Nominees for FAMAS 2025
This year’s 73rd FAMAS Awards will be held on August 22 at the Manila Hotel’s Fiesta Pavilion. Apart from the competitive categories, special honors will be given to Ice Seguerra, Gladys Reyes, Judy Ann Santos, Matet de Leon, Ian Veneracion, and Niño Muhlach as recipients of the FAMAS Child Icon of Philippine Cinema award.
With 13 categories in total and a slate of powerhouse performances, the 2025 ceremony promises a night that celebrates not just individual achievement but the enduring magic of Filipino filmmaking.
