Following her hugely successful summer anthem ‘Espresso,‘ Sabrina Carpenter continues to rise through the ranks as she dropped yet another piping-hot single, ‘Please, please, please.’
This track is the second release from her upcoming sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet — scheduled for release on August 23, 2024.
Chart-Topping Queen
The blonde popstar released ‘Please Please Please‘ nearly a month ago on June 6th, alongside a crime drama music video starring herself and her real-life boyfriend, Barry Keoghan. The video has since garnered over 43 million views on YouTube.
Critics lauded the song ‘Please Please Please,‘ propelling Sabrina Carpenter to her first-ever chart-topping position on the Billboard Hot 100.
A Sequel to “Espresso”
The ‘Please Please Please’ video continues the story started in the earlier 2024 release ‘Espresso’. In ‘Espresso,’ Carpenter’s character finds herself behind bars at the video’s conclusion.
“I ended the last video getting arrested. So, I thought it would be satisfying to start the ‘Please Please Please’ video in jail. The idea of falling in love with a convict was one I liked. I also liked the idea of being shocked and embarrassed every time he commits crimes.” the singer said. “I was so lucky to get Barry Keoghan in the video. He is just magic on screen.”
Sexy Crime Vibes
Director Bardia Zeinali had a clear vision for the music video for “Please Please Please.” The song’s narrative is about a woman begging her unpredictable partner to behave. (or, to quote the song’s best lyric, “Don’t embarrass me, motherfucker”). The music video needed to capture the sexy crime vibes of the song.
“The concept was pretty collaborative. I had a brief from Sabrina’s team — they wanted it to pick up from where ‘Espresso’ left off, and they wanted it to be about this person that Sabrina’s character keeps falling for, that has this chaotic behavior. So I just elaborated on that and started to think a bit more about specifically what happens. I liked this idea of there being a role reversal and an exchange of power towards the end.” Zeinali tells GQ in an interview, and adds,
“We were really looking at film references more than anything else and pop culture references in terms of what we wanted the spirit of this moment to be. Even J.Lo and Ben Affleck not to reference, but to capture that spirit. It’s similar in the sense that they’re this really exciting young couple, both having big moments in their respective careers, coming together and making a piece of art. But this is very much not real life — it’s a story”, said the director.
Currently, ‘Please, please please’ has over 270 million streams on Spotify.
