Tony Stark may have died as a hero, but Robert Downey Jr. lived long enough to see himself become the villain, Doctor Doom.
Years after his iconic role as Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. is set to make a surprising return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Doctor Doom in the upcoming ‘Avengers’ movies. This unexpected twist has left fans buzzing with excitement and anticipation.
Downey had seemingly concluded his Marvel journey in 2019 after portraying Stark in 10 films. His character, Iron Man, made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Thanos in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Many believed this marked the end of Downey’s contract, but Marvel had other plans.
From Iron Man to Doctor Doom
On July 27, at SDCC, Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr.’s return. Not as Tony Stark, but Doctor Doom. This revelation occurred during a panel celebrating ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ box office success. The R-rated movie is set to become the highest-grossing ever.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios head, announced that Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ would helm the next two ‘Avengers’ movies.

The panel hit a fever pitch when a group of hooded figures donning masks resembling the infamous Doctor Doom flooded the stage. In an unforgettable moment, Downey Jr. dramatically unmasked himself, eliciting cheers from the crowd.
“I like playing complicated characters,” Downey declared as fans chanted his name, signaling their overwhelming approval.
A Major Twist in the MCU
Speculation surrounded Downey’s possible MCU return. Most anticipated his Iron Man reprisal. However, his Doctor Doom casting in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ (2026) and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ (2027) shocked everyone. It was an unforeseen twist.
Downey’s eagerness to return to the MCU has been evident all year. In an article by Variety, following his Oscar win for ‘Oppenheimer,’ Downey expressed his enthusiasm for rejoining the franchise.
“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey said. “That role chose me. And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.” (@Variety)
Downey’s History with the Role
Previously, Robert Downey was considered for Doctor Doom. Marvel Entertainment released a video last year with Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige. Favreau disclosed that Downey was a potential Doctor Doom for the 2005 ‘Fantastic Four’ during its casting process. This happened before the first MCU movie, ‘Iron Man’ (2008).
“I remember that Robert had come in for a general [meeting] on [‘Iron Man’] and you had already met with him for Doctor Doom or something,” Favreau recalled.
Although Julian McMahon ultimately played Victor Von Doom in the 2005 film, Downey’s potential for the role was evident even then.
Somehow, Downey Jr.’s return feels inevitable. His ability to bring depth and complexity to characters makes him a perfect fit for one of Marvel’s most notorious supervillains. Fans can look forward to seeing how Robert Downey’s portrayal of Doctor Doom will unfold in the new ‘Avengers’ films.
As always, Marvel knows how to keep its audience on the edge of their seats, and this casting choice is sure to do just that.
