The entertainment industry is an intricate tapestry woven with stories of resilience, unexpected opportunities, and unwavering passion. One such story belongs to Gil Cuerva, a multi-faceted talent who has gracefully transitioned from shy beginnings to modeling, and eventually, acting. In this exclusive interview, Gil opens up about his journey, the challenges he’s faced, and his unwavering determination to keep moving forward.

Early Life and the Modeling Spark
Gil Cuerva’s story starts with a surprising confession: “Growing up, I was actually always a shy guy,” he shares. “I was a bit awkward, maybe even dorky.” Yet, this reserved demeanor didn’t stop him from seizing opportunities when they came knocking. His foray into modeling began during his college years. Like many, he was simply a student navigating life when fate intervened. “I got spotted by an agency,” Gil recalls. “From there, I decided to go for it—Carpe Diem, YOLO, or whatever you want to call it. I started attending go-sees, building my portfolio, and eventually had a brief stint modeling in Hong Kong.”

Though his Hong Kong experience was short-lived, it ignited a fire within him. “I wanted to make the most of the opportunity,” he says. Little did he know, his return to the Philippines would mark the start of a completely different chapter.
The Leap to Acting
Gil’s transition to acting was nothing short of serendipitous. “When I came back from Hong Kong, I was approached to audition for a show,” he says. Without any acting experience or formal training, he decided to take a chance. “Acting was something I always wanted to pursue as a kid. I grew up watching romantic movies with my mom, and films like the Before Sunrise series deeply resonated with me.”

To his surprise, the audition process moved quickly. “I went through a series of auditions,” he explains. “By November 2016, I had landed my first role as a lead actor in a show where I played a mysterious character who happened to be an alien.” Reflecting on the moment he got the news, Gil laughs, “I was playing Dota when they called. My manager was so excited, but I just said thank you and went back to my game. I didn’t know how to process it at the time.”
The shift from modeling to acting wasn’t easy. “It was trial by fire,” he admits. “The learning curve was steep, especially since I had no prior experience.” Despite the challenges, Gil’s perseverance shone through. “Eight years later, I’m still here, trying to make a name for myself and make the most of every opportunity.”

Adapting to a Changing Industry
As someone who entered the industry during the blogging era, Gil has witnessed the rise of digital platforms and influencer culture. “Time flies,” he says. “When I started, it was all about blogs and personal websites. Now, it’s TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube.” Adapting hasn’t always been smooth. “I try to put myself out there more, but sometimes I struggle,” he admits. “I feel like my life isn’t exciting enough to post about.”
However, Gil understands the importance of staying visible. “I make an effort to attend events and build good relationships with PR agencies. It’s all about showing brands and audiences who I am beyond television.”

The rise of overnight virality has reshaped the entertainment landscape. “You can’t downplay virality because, at the end of the day, show business is a business,” Gil observes. While acknowledging its role in the industry, he emphasizes the value of talent and uniqueness.
“If you’re not viral, focus on what you can bring to the table. Whether it’s talent or something else, find your unique selling point.”
When asked if he’s ever felt overshadowed by influencers, Gil’s perspective is refreshingly humble. “This industry has a way of humbling you,” he says. “You can’t act entitled. It’s all about proving yourself and building relationships.”

Mental Health and Self-Awareness
Mental health is a topic close to Gil’s heart. “Awareness is key,” he says. While he has experienced moments of anxiety and stress, he is cautious about making definitive claims. “I see a psychiatrist regularly, but I don’t want to self-diagnose. I think it’s important to acknowledge when something doesn’t feel right and seek professional help.” For Gil, mental health is just like physical health—something that should be recognized and addressed without stigma.
However, he’s cautious about being a spokesperson for mental health. “I’m still dealing with my own challenges,” he explains. “Before I can talk about it publicly, I need to fully understand and manage it myself.”
Gil’s stance on mental health is clear: “When things don’t feel right, try to be aware and acknowledge it. Don’t deny it or brush it aside. That awareness is the first step toward addressing the issue.”

Looking Ahead
As he enters his eighth year in the industry, Gil remains focused on growth. “I’m not getting any younger,” he says with a smile. “I want to land a good role in a film, improve my digital presence, and get more hosting work. Ultimately, I hope to figure out what I can offer that makes producers, directors, and writers want to work with me.”
Aside from acting, Gil also aspires to expand his hosting career. “I’ve hosted every now and then, and I genuinely enjoy it. Hopefully, I’ll get more opportunities to do so,” he adds.

A Message to His Younger Self
When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, Gil’s response is heartfelt: “Don’t waste time. Life is short, and there’s so much you can achieve if you don’t let opportunities pass you by.”
Reflecting on his journey, he shares,
“Sometimes I feel like I took things for granted. I wish I had made the most of every opportunity back then. But hindsight is 20/20, and all I can do now is keep pushing forward.”

Remembering Gil Cuerva
Gil hopes to be remembered as someone who never gave up. “I want people to see me as someone who kept going, no matter how many times the house of cards fell,” he says. “There were moments I wanted to quit, but I’m glad I didn’t. Resilience is what defines me.”

As Gil continues to carve his path in the ever-evolving entertainment world, his story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and staying true to oneself. His journey may have started with shy beginnings, but it’s clear that Gil Cuerva is here to stay, inspiring others to seize every opportunity and keep moving forward.
